Concerning behaviour

Mount Royal University is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our students, employees and visitors. The Concerning Behaviour on Campus Team (CBCT) is a confidential resource students, faculty and staff can contact 24/7.

The CBCT is there so you can report behaviour that might be signs a person may cause harm to themselves or others. By watching out for the physical safety and mental well-being of those around us, the Mount Royal community can improve the quality of life for everyone on campus.

Know when you're needed. Recognize concerning behaviour on campus and know what to do about it.

What to report

If you see behaviour or a situation that concerns you, or behaviour that poses a significant disruption to the learning, living or working environment at Mount Royal, you need to report it to the CBCT by contacting security services at 403.440.5900. Information received is kept confidential.

You should report behaviour that is:

  • Atypical (changes in how a person usually behaves)
  • Dangerous (behaviour that could cause physical injury)
  • Threatening (behaviour that causes alarm and is intended to menace)

Behaviour to watch for

You can help prevent violence on campus by recognizing when a person's behaviour is a warning sign. These signs may be obvious or subtle, but if you see any of the behaviour listed below, report it to the CBCT:

  • A fascination with weapons or explosives
  • Access to weapons
  • A history of bringing weapons to campus
  • Making threats to act violently - threats might be verbal, written or nonverbal
  • Intimidating, belligerent, harassing or other inappropriate and aggressive behaviour
  • Identifying a specific target or targets for violence - making plans to act out violently
  • Talking about events that might provoke a violent act
  • Praising other school violence events - identifying with the offenders
  • A history of arrests or convictions for violence
  • Numerous conflicts with others, such as professors, supervisors or fellow employees or students
  • Brooding over an event where the person felt he/she had been treated unfairly
  • Expressions of feeling persecuted by others
  • Constantly blaming others and refusing to take responsibility for actions or events
  • Is experiencing or has recently experienced a traumatic or stressful event in their personal life
  • Showing no concern for legal or personal consequences of actions - appears to lack empathy or remorse
  • Signs of agitation (pacing, clenched fists, etc.) or a maintained, prolonged stare
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Expression of feelings of depression, hopelessness, despair
  • Saying he/ she has no options or that there is no way out
  • Obsessively following, phoning, e-mailing or stalking others

The University's Health & Safety Policy (POL 1700 on Lotus Notes) states that all students, faculty, staff and administrators are responsible for helping Mount Royal create a safe campus.
